CORVALLIS — The Oregon State defense experienced a shock to the system in the first quarter against California on Saturday.

A costly penalty on special teams set up a long touchdown through the air. And the Beavers’ offense sputtering led to another on the next drive, cementing the confidence of Cal freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.

The Beavers were suddenly behind, 14-0, and had to claw back the rest of the way in a 34-15 loss .
