MENIFEE COUNTY, Ky. —
A person died after they fell while hiking at Red River Gorge this weekend.
Powell County Search and Rescue said they were dispatched around 4 p.m. Saturday for a call at Whittleton Arch. The initial reports were about a person falling 40 feet.
When crews arrived and located the hiker, they were in critical condition. The hiker was airlifted to UK Hospital, where they later died.
Powell County officials are reminding those who enjoy the trails to be careful, especially when they are at elevated heights in the Gorge.
"What may usually be a simple slip can be life-threatening when at height. Stay vigilant of the ground around you and be sure to always stay a safe distance from the edge!" Powell County officials said in a statement on Facebook.
