Sen. Tony Hwang spent part of his Monday afternoon talking with potential voters, something he’s spent many holiday weekends doing through his two decades in the state legislature.

Hwang (R-Fairfield) is not on the ballot, though. In fact, his seat is not up for re-election until next year.

Instead, he was gathering petition signatures in hopes of forcing a special election for first selectman in his hometown.

Democrats last week picked Christine Vitale to replace former first selectman Bill Gerber, who died in July halfway through his four-year term.

“We’re petitioning to allow 42,000-plus voters of Fairfield to make that decision,” Hwang said while collecting signatures outside Saugatuck Sweets.
