The Student Restroom Privacy Act has passed out of a Michigan House committee.

The legislation requires schools to provide students restrooms and locker rooms that match their biological sex. Republican state Representative Joseph Fox brought the bill in front of the State House Education and Workforce Committee.

“ Across our state, from preschools to public universities, many schools lack important safeguards in spaces intended to protect privacy and dignity,” Fox said.

Kyle Zawacki, a legislative director for the ACLU of Michigan, said he’s against this.

“ These type of bills violate equal protection principles, require an invasion of medical privacy, and undermine civil rights protections,” Zawacki said.
