BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Some of Bakersfield's working force celebrated Labor Day on Monday, while actively fighting for better union rights.
America's first Labor Day was held in September 1895, thanks to a movement started by labor and union activists across the country. Labor unions might be celebrating the day off, but they say there is plenty of room for improvement, even after 130 years.
"Well we're laborers and its Labor Day Weekend," said Lorenzo Hernandez, with Liuna Local 220. "So, we are out here with all of these other trades."
"We're here to unionize. We're here to get together and we're here to come together," said Maria Chavez, with Liuna Local 220.
