WEST LOOP — Demonstrators packed West Loop streets on Labor Day to stand up against billionaires they accuse of abetting a presidential administration intent on deploying federal troops to the city.
Local unions and labor organizers held the “Workers Over Billionaires” march and series of rallies Monday, where labor leaders and elected officials said union workforces would be among those standing against a potential deployment of federal troops that could come as early as this week.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, who signed an executive order Saturday protecting Chicagoans’ constitutional rights ahead of the potential deployment, stood atop a float at the first of four planned rallies and said “We’re gonna defend our democracy in the city of Chicago.”
