Melissa Pye and her 11-year-old son Ian were looking forward to a day of mud bog racing on the final day of the Smoke ‘N’ Spurs Festival just outside of Mattawa at the Anderson Event Park.

That day was turned on its head after Pye and Ian were both injured during one of the ATV’s runs through the mud bog.

“The bikes were going full force through the water and mud down the track straight towards us. As the bike crawled quickly out of the pits, the bike on the left made the proper turn around before the bike on the right, which was directly in front of myself, Ian and other spectators surrounding us behind the only thing separating the bikes from the people, the steel fence,” Pye told The Nugget.

She then had almost no time to prepare as the tense situation turned worse.
