MISSION, S.D. (KELO) — For many communities, nearby access to a pool where kids and families can swim is a given. But not everywhere. Mission, South Dakota's old pool, which was built in 1967, closed in 2017. Now in 2025, a campaign is ongoing for a new city pool.

"It got to the point where hey we, there's a lot of memories with this pool, there is, I mean, countless, for everybody," Mission city manager Dan Brave said. "But it got to the point where it just wasn't safe anymore for us to keep it going."

But a green outfield to the immediate west of the closed pool offers the promise of a new era because it's where a new pool is planned to rise up. Amanda Riley, who sits on the capital campaign committee for the pool, has kids who are going to enjoy themselves at the new facility.
