BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Alabama residents traveled to Georgia on Labor Day in hopes to win the $1.1 billion Powerball jackpot.

“You have to buy a lottery ticket to win it, and eventually someone’s got to win it, I would think,” Alabama resident Carla Schaaphok said.

Monday's Powerball drawing is the fifth-largest jackpot in Powerball history. The last Powerball jackpot winner was in May.

Schaaphok and her family were already traveling back home to Alabama after their Labor Day weekend getaway. But they had to make what could be a life-changing gas station pit stop.

“I’m optimistic. Fingers crossed,” Schaaphok said.
