AUSTIN, Texas — Texas House lawmakers are advancing a proposal to strengthen penalties for members who break quorum.

On Monday night, the House Administration Committee voted to move forward with several measures outlined in House Resolution 128, filed by Rep. Cody Vasut (R-Angleton). The resolution would change internal House rules to impose stricter consequences on members who intentionally skip legislative sessions to prevent a quorum.

The proposed penalties include increasing fines, stripping lawmakers of chair or vice-chair positions after two or more consecutive days of absence, and reducing seniority for each day missed beyond a three-day absence.
