KEOKUK (WGEM) - Many families in the Tri-States enjoyed a three-day weekend as the federal holiday that was officially established in 1894 came to a close Monday.

You couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful morning at the Keokuk Labor Day Parade. The nearly 40-year-old annual event continues to carry out old traditions while also embracing new ones.

Co-organizer Tina Hartman said this year’s theme was “No Place Like Home.”

“It’s whatever anyone wants it to be,” Hartman said. “I always think of ‘The Wizard of Oz.’”

Several floats had people dressed up as the famous characters such as Dorothy, the Tin Man, and the Wicked Witch.

The parade also tied in its traditional Labor Day theme by showcasing several workers’ unions, such as Iron Workers Local #577.
