MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - A reduction in Alabama’s grocery tax took effect Sept. 1.
Alabama lawmakers passed a bill last legislative session that reduced the grocery tax from three percent to two percent.
The Alabama Grocers Association said they have been pushing for the reduction and want to eventually see the tax eliminated.
“It’s something that we as grocers see people in need every day in our stores and realize that consumers did want this and need this,” said Ellie Taylor, president and CEO of the Alabama Grocers Association.
Taylor said a one percent reduction in the state’s grocery tax will save an Alabama family of four roughly $125 a year.
She said asking for a reduction is not clear cut, since the funds from the tax go towards the state’s education trust fund.
