NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News Public Library is kicking off a new Reading Dragons challenge for children in grades K-5, encouraging kids to read throughout the school year while collecting trading cards featuring mythical creatures.

For every 30 minutes a child reads, they earn a trading card. Participants can collect up to 16 cards per month, including a full family of cards for each row on their reading tracker, egg, baby, teen, and adult forms of the creature they choose.

Each month features four different mythical creatures, and cards can be collected during the current month and for 30 days afterward. For example, September’s cards can be collected through October 30.

Reading logs and three starter cards are available at all Newport News Public Library branches.
