A fall in the number of drug-related deaths in Glasgow has been welcomed, but the figures remain “unacceptably high” — with “worrying” new threats sparking concern.

In 2024, 185 people in the city died as a result of drug misuse, according to new statistics published by National Records of Scotland (NRS). That is a 24.8% decrease on the previous year when 246 deaths were recorded.

However, Glasgow still has the highest rate of drug misuse deaths in Scotland, where the drug deaths rate remains the worst in Europe. Recent figures for suspected drug deaths in Scotland were higher than last year.
