GRAFTON, N.D. — A Salvadoran citizen has been charged with assaulting federal agents after he tried to escape an arrest last week for illegal entry into the United States.
According to federal court documents, 27-year-old Carlos Jose Guzman-Pineda was a passenger in a vehicle that Border Patrol Intelligence officers stopped Aug. 25 in Grafton.
The traffic stop was initiated after agents observed three men in a hotel parking lot, one of whom matched the physical description of a man who had fled law enforcement in Park River four days earlier, get into the vehicle and drive away.
During the stop, Guzman-Pineda produced a passport from El Salvador and claimed he was in the U.S. legally, but a records check by the agents on scene determined he had no legal immigration status in the U.S. an
