WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (WOI) - An Afghan refugee in Iowa is sharing his concerns following a deadly 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan, WOI reports .

The refugee’s wife and children are still in eastern Afghanistan, and experienced the effects of the earthquake.

The refugee lives in West Des Moines, and traveled to the U.S. on a special immigrant visa after serving alongside American troops during the war in Afghanistan. He requested to remain anonymous to protect his family from danger with the Taliban.

He said houses belonging to his family’s neighbors are now reduced to piles of rubble following the earthquake. His family is located in Watapur, a district in the Afghanistan province of Kunar.
