OTTUMWA, Iowa (KCRG) - An Ottumwa inmate fell through the ceiling of a jail cell while attempting to escape.

In August, Morgan West was arrested for violating probation on a forgery charge and failing to appear in court on a theft charge.

The sheriff’s office said she tried to escape by crawling through the ceiling of a multi-inmate cell on August 28.

Officers detained West at the Wapello County Jail after watching her on surveillance cameras.

West now also faces charges of attempted escape and first-degree criminal mischief for damaging the jail cell. The cell has been closed for repairs.

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office must pay to temporarily house inmates in other county facilities due to the cell closure.
