MONTPELIER, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - As we enter hunting season in the Green Mountain State, the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to remind people that since a new law that was enacted in June, poachers can face fines twice as much as before - or prison terms up to three times as long.

"Simply put, these updates give our game wardens more teeth to hold poachers accountable," wrote Vermont Fish and Wildlife on social media Tuesday.

Act 47 was signed by Governor Phil Scott on June 5. Now, big game poachers can now face penalties of up to $2,000 on their first offense or $5,000 on their second offense. These numbers are each $1,000 above the highest possible fines last year.
