AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - In just a few weeks, we mark one year since Hurricane Helene swept through our area, taking the lives of more than two dozen people across the CSRA.

In Augusta, seven people lost their lives. And now Augusta leaders are taking the step towards memorializing their names forever.

Making this the place where the names and loves lost to Hurricane Helene are etched into Augusta’s memory forever.

“Not a single day that I don’t think about everyone. Everybody that’s on that list, I know their names. I see their faces. I know their stories,” said Mayor Garnett Johnson.

Augusta leaders on Tuesday approved some temporary ordinance exceptions meant to help rebuild homes damaged nearly a year ago by Hurricane Helene.
