PULLMAN, Wash. - A Washington State Cougar men's basketball legend died today at 88 years old.
George Raveling, a three-time conference coach of the year, served as WSU's head coach from 1972-1983, leading the Cougs to two NCAA Tournament appearances and 167 wins.
Their 1980 appearance was the first since 1941, and that season featured WSU's first win over UCLA in 14 years.
Raveling was the Pac-8's first African-American head coach.
After his time in Pullman, Raveling led the Iowa Hawkeyes and USC Trojans before retiring, later serving as the Director of International Basketball for Nike.
In 2020, Raveling's name was hoisted on a banner into the rafters of Beasley Coliseum, forever immortalized for Washington State.
