YOUNGSTOWN The Youngstown Police Department has released new details about the shooting that occurred last week at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. According to a news release from the department, the incident on Thursday was a suicide.

In the release, police state that around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, officers were called to assist Mercy Health Police with a shooting inside a restricted area of the emergency room.

A 33-year-old male, identified as the victim, disarmed a Mercy Health police officer who was conducting a routine check of the ER. The individual then used the officer's weapon to inflict a self-harming wound. The man died despite receiving immediate medical attention, according to police.
