Remember the great backyard chicken controversy of 2009? Sure you do. It provided plenty of wordplay fun for Buffalo News reporters, especially headline writers, but it was serious business for city dwellers who wanted to keep a few chickens in their backyards, ostensibly for the eggs, but also as fun family pets.
The first story I can find – from former News staffer Brian Meyer on March 31, 2009 – had this header: “Chickens routed from roost, for now – West Side henhouse runs afoul of city ban.”
That West Side henhouse belonged to a friend of mine, Monique Watts and, let me assure you, she may have relocated her hens for the time being but that was never going to be the end of it.
