Federal Opposition Leader Sussan Ley expressed her distress after witnessing a Neo-Nazi confront Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen during a press conference. Ley stated she felt "sick" watching the incident unfold, highlighting her concerns about rising hatred and intimidation in society.

Ley emphasized the need for the government to take action to "de-radicalize" and "de-escalate" such situations. She remarked, "I disagree with Jacinta Allan on a whole range of policy matters but I really felt sick watching how she was shouted at by this Nazi individual and had to leave in such manner. This is not who we are as Australians. This is not the country that I migrated to as a teenager for a better chance at a life that has delivered so much."

The confrontation occurred amid ongoing criticism of the government's migration policies, which have sparked nationwide protests, including those attended by Neo-Nazi groups. Ley addressed questions regarding whether the opposition's stance on migration was exacerbating tensions. She asserted that the opposition is advocating for a "sensible, balanced approach to migration," while also expressing concern over the government's plan to bring in a million migrants without adequate housing or infrastructure.

The government recently confirmed its permanent migration intake will remain at 185,000 for the 2025-26 period. Ley refrained from suggesting a specific migration figure but reiterated the need for a more thoughtful approach.

In related news, Foreign Minister Penny Wong is set to meet with Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in prison in February 2024. Wong condemned the lack of a transparent investigation into Navalny's death and announced new sanctions against 14 individuals linked to suppressing political expression in Russia. Wong stated, "The human rights situation in Russia continues to deteriorate with violent crackdowns aimed at suppressing human rights and anti-war advocacy."

As political discussions continue, Ley will participate in a live Q&A session to address questions from the public, further engaging with constituents on pressing issues.
