SPARTANBURG, S.C. —

Family and the Spartanburg community are remembering the life of former Mayor Junie White, who died earlier this week of natural causes. He was 87.

White was first elected as the city's mayor in 2009, a position he held until 2022, when he was succeeded by current Mayor Jerome Rice. Rice served on City Council while White was mayor. Latest Forecast

"He was a people person," Rice said. "He did a lot for people that no one even really knows about, and he doesn't want anybody to know about it. That was not the reason he was doing it. He was doing it just to help people."

City officials on Tuesday lowered the American flag outside its offices on East Main Street to half-staff to honor the former mayor.
