WASHINGTON — A D.C. woman entrusted with caring for her grandfather’s finances is facing multiple charges after she allegedly used his money to pay for over a quarter million dollars in transactions ranging from credit card bills to luxury clothing to renting a high-end apartment.
According to Montgomery County Police, officers began investigating 45-year-old Erica Hopper when a concerned family member filed a complaint.
They say Hopper was given power of attorney over her grandfather’s money in December 2020, giving her authority over his financial affairs and creating a fiduciary responsibility to act in his best interest.
Over the course of four years, they say, she withdrew about $266,000 from the 95-year-old's bank account to pay for her own expenses.
