A strict new rule is to be introduced across all UK shops and supermarkets as part of a new government initiative.

In a bid to prevent harm to children's health from their consumption, the government has put a ban on shops and supermarkets selling energy drinks to children under the age of 16.

Under the new rules it will be illegal for any UK retailer to sell high-caffeine energy drinks, containing more than 150 mg of caffeine per litre, to anyone under 16.

Examples of high-caffeine energy drinks that would breach the limit include Red Bull, Monster, Relentless and Prime. Lower-caffeine soft drinks – such as Coca‑Cola, Coca‑Cola Zero, Diet Coke and Pepsi – are not affected, and neither are tea and coffee.
