Fox News' Jesse Watters tried to defend President Donald Trump from Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D-CA) recent trolling spree on Tuesday — but Newsom hit right back.

In recent weeks, Newsom has taken to mockingly imitating some of the most notorious "Trumpisms" through his press office account, including all-caps social media posts full of self-aggrandizing rhetoric that sometimes end with "THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!"

Watters, on his Fox News program, tried to turn that back around on him.

"Gavin is out there stealing Trump's style," said Watters. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Why doesn't Gavin imitate his policies?"

In response to a clip of that remark being posted to X, Newsom's press office responded by posting, "because they are trash."

In addition to the Trump trolling, Newsom has caught national media attention for setting up a ballot referendum in California to temporarily suspend the independent redistricting commission's congressional maps to implement a retaliatory gerrymander targeting five Republican seats, in response to Texas Republicans targeting five Democratic seats.
