SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) -- Former Spartanburg Mayor Junie White passed away Monday, September 1, 2025, and is being remembered by those close to him.

Mayor White served the City of Spartanburg for over 15 years, as mayor and city councilman. He was mayor for three terms between 2009 and 2022, before current Mayor Jerome Rice took office.

"It's a tremendous loss for me, Junie was a friend first and foremost," Mayor Rice said. "And also for the City of Spartanburg, just a loss for the community."

Mayor Rice worked with White for 12 years. He was a councilman under White's leadership.

Mayor Rice added that White set up Spartanburg to be what it is now, a community oriented city.
