YANCEY COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) -- Yancey County health officials warned residents to be mindful of wild animals, after a rabid bat was found in the county.
According to the Yancey County Health Department, the bat was confirmed to have tested positive for rabies on August 29. Leaders said they are working alongside animal welfare and state health officials to continually monitor the situation.
Rabies is oftentimes spread through contact with wild animals, even if the animal does not seem sick.
Anyone who sees an animal exhibiting unusual behavior is asked to contact the Yancey County Animal Welfare Department at (828) 682-2124.
