The city of Fort Wayne wants to expand its region that offers discounted liquor licenses to attract more entertainment venues downtown.

Fort Wayne City Council gave its initial approval Tuesday to expand the Downtown Dining District, which is in northeast downtown, primarily between Jefferson Boulevard and Fourth Street. The district allows businesses to buy liquor licenses through part of an annual fee of $2,500 if they are open 300 days a year and at least half of their sales each year are not related to alcohol.

With final approval, the expansion would increase the annual fee to $3,500 for more marketing opportunities and decrease the required number of days of operation to 210 a year. It would also drop the percentage of non-liquor sales to 25%.
