CALERA, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A man is behind bars in Shelby County, accused of stealing packages in a Calera subdivision.

The number of “porch pirates” continues to grow as more people turn to online shopping.

Calera Police Chief David Hyche said their department received a report and multiple tips over the weekend related to package thefts happening in the Waterford subdivision. Some neighbors called with information, and others shared doorbell camera footage.

John Michael Woodard is now in the Shelby County Jail charged with larceny/theft.

The chief said detectives were able to act so quickly, beginning the investigation and arresting a suspect within only days, because of the community’s help.

He believes they get so much help because of their transparency and communication.
