Freedom is on the minds of theater makers this fall, when a new crop of revivals and premieres will explore the pursuit of self-determination. There will be bold takes on familiar stories, including Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” crossed with the life of Malcolm X, and a stage adaptation of “Purple Rain” starring a D.C. singer-songwriter. And a few big names are bringing their talents to the stage, including Sia and Tom Hanks. Here are the season’s highlights.
