During the Republican caucus meeting on Wednesday morning, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told the group of lawmakers that the two competing bills to release the investigation files around Jeffrey Epstein were largely the same and that the caucus should vote for the bill being presented by Rep. James Comer (R-KY) in the House Oversight and Reform Committee.
It was then that Rep. Tom Massie (R-KY) stood up and called Johnson out for giving the members false information.
According to Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman, Massie "said the speaker's presentation was unfair and inaccurate and that today’s resolution isn’t as strong as his discharge petition."
Indeed, the press conference in front of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday morning said that the Oversight petition is a "non-binding" request for documents. Massie's measure would require that the Justice Department release the files.
During the press conference, NBC's Sahil Kapur, quoted Massie saying that Republicans are falling in line behind the toothless measure.
"We’re two short. We need two more signers from the Republican side to get this through," he said.
"And none of them are stepping up to the plate," said Massie. "They’re at odds with our base right now, and particularly the MAGA base."
