MACOMB COUNTY, MI -- A Michigan teenager has received a lengthy prison sentence for causing a crash that killed a pregnant, 31-year-old woman and her unborn child.

Travion Smith, 18, of Detroit was sentenced to 25-50 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and other charges in July.

The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 12, 2023 in which Smith was driving a Chevy Equinox on Van Dyke Avenue near 15 Mile Road. Police attempted to stop Smith, who was 16 at the time.

Smith fled from police, driving up to 93 mph recklessly, before he ran the red light at 16 Mile and Van Dyke and hit a vehicle occupied by Norman Gumma, his pregnant wife, Faith, and his 4-year-old son.
