Museum curators are always trying to keep in step with the times and with what they think their audiences will respond to. But major exhibitions take two to five years to organize.

So perhaps it’s not surprising that the cultural mood can change between conception and execution. What seemed comfortably in tune with the zeitgeist when an exhibition was first proposed can seem suddenly dissonant, oppositional and highly precarious by the time it is ready for prime time.
