PEORIA HEIGHTS ( 25News Now ) - Despite a single trustee’s impassioned plea to provide families with tax relief, the Peoria Heights Village Board has decided to continue taxing grocery shoppers.

The village joins several other central Illinois communities adopting a 1% sales tax on groceries when the state stops collecting the money for local governments in January.

The 1% tax amounts to $1 for every $100 spent of groceries. For Peoria Heights, that means at least $125,000 a year in revenue.

“That missing revenue puts the tax burden squarely on our citizens when it comes to fixing things like our water infrastructure, supporting our fire department, and covering other major expenses we have as a community,” said Trustee Nathan Steinwedel.
