Just moments after an explosive news conference on the Capitol steps Wednesday that saw Jeffrey Epstein survivors demand transparency, the fight over Justice Department files on the disgraced financier went on to spill onto the House floor, where one Democratic lawmaker laid into Republicans for “continuing to cover up the Epstein files!”

Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA) kicked off the reconvening of the House by introducing a resolution that, in part, would permit the House Oversight Committee to continue its investigation into the Epstein files.

Republicans’ backing of the committee’s efforts on Epstein runs in opposition to another effort, one launched by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA), who instead pursued what’s known as a discharge petition, a legislative tool that would force a vote on a measure compelling the DOJ to release all files it holds on Epstein.

Epstein died in 2019, awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, and is alleged to have run a blackmail operation targeting powerful figures.

Speaking to Griffith’s proposal, Rep. James McGovern (D-MA) called the resolution “insane,” while at the same time ridiculing the lawmaker’s “monotone delivery.”

“We already have a real, bi-partisan bill to unseal all these files: it's the Massie-Khanna bill!” McGovern said. “And last night, every single Republican on the Rules Committee voted against the bi-partisan bill – every single one!”

President Donald Trump was asked about his thoughts on the press conference while in the Oval Office, to which he called it a “Democrat hoax,” a claim he’s levied before when asked about calls for Epstein files to be released.

“They're trying to get people to talk about something that's totally irrelevant to the success that we've had as a nation since I've been president,” Trump said.

Now responding to Trump’s comments, McGovern said he was “not surprised” that the president would shy away from calls for files on Epstein to be released.

“I'm not surprised the guy who once called Epstein a 'terrific guy,' and who Epstein considered his 'closest friend,' is not actually interested in getting to the truth,” McGovern said.

“What is obvious to everyone is that someone is hiding something, and while all of this stalling goes on, what happens? Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's partner in crime, winds up in a cushy country-club prison courtesy of Trump's political appointees. Not a word of outrage from this Republican majority, not a whisper of accountability, just silence!”
