President Donald Trump was in office only a few weeks when he proposed in February that the Gaza strip should be turned into a tourist haven after clearing the rubble and convincing the Palestinians who live there to leave voluntarily.

A rookie mistake, most people thought. You can’t deny people food and medicine, bomb their neighborhoods into dust, and call a decision to leave voluntary. And why would anyone familiar with the region expect Palestinians to suddenly surrender their hopes for an independent state?
