A suspect accused of fatally shooting a woman and injuring a 79-year-old man in Middle Georgia on Tuesday afternoon has died after being shot by deputies at a cemetery later that day, officials said.

At about 4 p.m., the Macon-Bibb County E-911 center got a call about a man and a woman who had been shot in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store on Jeffersonville Road, according to the sheriff’s office. When deputies arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds inside a Nissan Rogue. The 56-year-old woman died at the scene, while the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Their names have not been released.

“Witnesses reported it could have been due to an altercation as the result of a prior motor vehicle collision,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
