Alberta’s new book ban which removes certain books with sexual content in them from school libraries has been paused temporarily.
This comes after the Edmonton Public School District’s draft list of books to be removed from shelves was leaked online, which followed the rules to a T.
Unfortunately, the wording of the bill removed many classic literature books from the shelves, including books like George Orwell’s 1984 and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby . Even some books that are taught in many English classes across the province were on the list, such as the first book of Diana Gabaldon’s series Outlander .
Premier Danielle Smith has criticized the district, saying that the list is almost solely made of books put on for malicious compliance.
