LISBON, Portugal — A tragic accident occurred Wednesday when the Gloria funicular railway, a popular tourist attraction in Lisbon, derailed, leading to the deaths of 15 people and injuring 18 others, according to emergency services. Among the injured, five are reported to be in serious condition, and a child is among those hurt. The National Institute for Medical Emergencies confirmed that some of the injured are foreign nationals, although their identities have not been disclosed.

The incident is being described as the worst accident in the city’s recent history. Eyewitnesses reported that the yellow-and-white streetcar, which travels up and down a steep hill, appeared to be out of control before it derailed. Footage from the scene showed the streetcar lying on its side, partially crumpled, after crashing into a building at a bend in the road. Emergency workers were on-site for several hours, assisting those affected.

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas expressed his sorrow at the scene, stating, "This was a tragic accident … It’s a tragedy of the like we’ve never seen." President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also extended condolences to the families of the victims. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen shared her sympathies, writing in Portuguese, "It is with sadness that I learned of the derailment of the famous Elevador da Gloria."

The accident reportedly took place around 6 p.m., coinciding with the start of the evening rush hour. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, which will commence once the rescue operations conclude, as stated by the Portuguese government.

The Gloria funicular, which can carry over 40 passengers, is a vital part of Lisbon's public transport system and a significant draw for tourists. It connects the downtown area near Restauradores Square to the Bairro Alto district, known for its nightlife. The funicular, which has been in operation since 1885, is classified as a national monument.

Lisbon has seen a surge in tourism, with approximately 8.5 million visitors last year, making the funicular a popular attraction. Long lines of tourists typically form for the brief ride, highlighting its significance in the city’s cultural landscape.
