IOWA CITY — Mark Gronowski will not be the first in his family to take the field at Jack Trice Stadium and face down the Cyclones in an in-state clash when he leads Iowa on Saturday.

The Hawkeye quarterback’s father, Ray Gronowski, did it 41 years ago as a quarterback for the Drake Bulldogs.

Ray entered Jack Trice after re-earning the starting job for the Bulldogs the week prior.

He nearly led a come-from-behind win over Northern Iowa after relieving starter Ed Cheatham with the Bulldogs trailing 33-7. With Ray under center, Drake scored 21 unanswered points before an interception — by former UNI head coach and then Panther linebacker Mark Farley — ended the Bulldogs’ comeback hopes.
