COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - Cocke County is nearing it’s one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene and the county is using lessons learned from those floods to help update their Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Director Joe Esway says a Hazard Mitigation Plan comes in handy for the area to get through a disaster.

“It’s a way for municipalities to plan for and mitigate against disasters that they may face in the community,” Esway said.

The county’s Hazard Mitigation Plan needs to be revised every five years. This year, the revision fell right after Helene devastated Cocke County.

While the plan has been set, Esway wants to see some changes that would help the area, including providing backup power to the emergency operations center as well as other emergency stations.
