COLUMBUS, Ga. — A newborn baby in Columbus, Georgia, is now in the NICU after being found in a dumpster behind a motel, according to the local police department .

The Columbus Police Department said on Facebook that the baby was found in a dumpster behind a Budgetel motel on Victory Drive. The baby boy currently remains in the NICU as of the time of the post around noon Wednesday.

The CPD Special Victims Unit is investigating the situation. The department pointed to Georgia's safe haven laws, which allow mothers to anonymously and safely surrender a baby before they turn 30 days old at official locations like a medical facility or fire or police department.
