The early morning sun crested over the trees as students and parents hurried to the back of Broadview-Thomson K-8 School near Bitter Lake in North Seattle on Wednesday morning.

Students squinted, trying to make out the friends they hadn’t seen all summer. Parents gripped tote bags full of construction paper, Kleenex, markers and scissors while ushering their kid through the metal gates. Students buzzed around the asphalt playground comparing their schedules.
