Rep. Andy Ogles

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) reiterated on Wednesday his proposal to allow President Donald Trump to run for a third term.

"He’s truly leader at historic time in our nation, quite frankly in our world," Ogles said of Trump during an appearance on far-right network Newsmax.

When asked to elaborate on his suggestion, Ogles said: "Well, I have a bill that would amend the Constitution that would allow any president who has served non‑consecutive terms to run for a third turn. That’s only happened twice in history. So President Trump would be the individual who could actually run for a third term, because he is not serving consecutively."

In January, the Tennessee Republican first proposed a joint resolution that would amend the 22nd Amendment, which currently limits presidents to two elected terms. The amendment would allow a president to be elected a third time, but only if their previous two terms were non‑consecutive — effectively enabling Trump, uniquely in modern history, to run again after his 2020 defeat and 2024 victory.

In March, Trump told NBC News he was “not joking” about the idea of running again. He noted there were “methods which you could do it,” including the speculative scenario of Vice President JD Vance running and then transferring power to him. He declined to elaborate on other possibilities and added that it was “far too early to think about it.”

However, in a later interview aired on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump clarified his position: “I’ll be a two‑term president ... This is not something I’m looking to do.”

Still, ambiguity remains. While Trump said, “I’ll be a two‑term president,” he later added that he will “probably not” run again—though “I’d like to.”

Last month, during a high‑stakes summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, Trump reportedly gave them a tour of a merchandise-filled room in the White House. Prominently displayed were MAGA hats featuring slogans like “Trump 2028,” “4 More Years,” and “Trump Was Right About Everything.”

Meanwhile, Ogles' Wednesday remarks were mocked on social media.

Political scientist Joel Montfort wrote on the social platform X: "You know you're a complete and utter bootlicker when you are advocating for the overthrowing of the constitution to keep your guy in power."

Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wisc.) said in a post: "Add this to the 'I work with complete idiots' file."

Political commentator Keith Olbermann wrote: "Looks like @AndyOgles of Tennessee is advocating subverting the constitution. Better send those federalized National Guard personnel to restore order in light of the Tennessee insurrection."

Former GOP congressman Joe Walsh wrote: "Once again, he says it. In open defiance of his oath. My former political party is a cult."
