NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — President Donald Trump says New Orleans could soon see federal intervention to address crime, including the possible deployment of National Guard troops.

Trump made the comments during an Oval Office news conference Wednesday, pointing to Washington, D.C. as an example. He claimed that with National Guard support, the nation’s capital recently transformed into what he called a “safe zone.”

“We’re making a determination now. Do we go to Chicago, or do we go to a place like New Orleans, where we have a great Governor, Jeff Landry, who wants us to come in and straighten out,” Trump said. “A very nice section of this country that’s become quite tough, quite bad.”

Trump added that he believes crime in New Orleans could be addressed quickly.
