As the popularity of e-bikes grows, Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources is considering allowing them on all state trails.

Currently, only a few state trails allow electronic bikes.

“E-bikes are pretty worrisome,” Deb Levy said while using the Capital Crescent Trail Wednesday. “They go super fast. A lot of them are driven by kids who don’t have the awareness of driving a vehicle and what the impact is.”

For almost 25 years, Levy has been running on the Capital Crescent Trail, which allows Class 1 and 3 e-bikes with a 15 mph speed limit. Recently, Levy said, she’s noticed a huge change.

“It’s crazy,” she said. “In the past few years, I’ve seen the e-bikes just overtake the trail.”
