Snake bite season is underway in South Florida, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue warning that the hotter months from April through October bring a surge in snake activity and an increase in emergency calls.

The agency's Venom Response Unit is urging residents to stay alert, take precautions outdoors, and know what to do in case of a bite.

Safety reminders to avoid snake encounters in Florida

MDFR shared guidelines to help residents avoid dangerous snake encounters , including staying alert during early mornings and evenings when snakes are most active, keeping yards clear of debris, and never attempting to handle or kill a snake.

The agency also advises residents to remain cautious near tall grass, shrubs, leaf piles and waterways.
