The criminal justice system is “broken” – it’s an all-too-familiar cry for help that has fallen on deaf ears over and over again.

But York Region’s top cop once again pleaded for the system to be reformed during a news conference held Wednesday to provide updates on numerous recent violent crimes that include a Vaughan man gunned down while protecting his family from bandits, a woman abducted and a man wounded by gunfire during a home invasion in Markham, and a young girl killed in a Richmond Hill house fire that is now being investigated by Homicide detectives.

“This is not about politics, it’s about safety,” Chief Jim MacSween said, as he urged all involved in the criminal justice system to “do their part to keep violent offenders off the street.”
